Why a PhD?

Some asked me 8 years ago, when I was about to start into PhD studies, WHY I would want to do such a thing. Indeed -- especially at age 50!

Well, the first answer is that I had something to say. I had been wanting to do research in Presbyterianism, and I am proud to say that I pulled it off. I proved something, scientifically. I showed in standard theological and historical terms that Presbyterianism is still a vital part of the Christian faith, and has made huge contributions to the education, expansion, and gournding of the faith. I am, as always, thankful and proud to be a Presbyterian, for I feel it is the Biblical faith -- full of life and vibrancy. When this has been doubted, the CHURCH has suffered worldwide.

Another reason is that I had always wanted to continue with my studies, even after getting my Doctor of Ministries, which focuses on the practical side of professional ministry. I was told by others I should pursue this, and I am glad I did. And I grew through it.

A third reason is that, given my position as a professor for the past 30 years, I need the credentials. Yes, the paper does make a difference in theological education! I need that all the more as a seminary President! It brings credibility to the work I have done, it brings respect to my students; it brings credibility to the educational standards of our school. This is all the more important since Ukraine does not grant "educational" status to religious schools! Even the Orthodox and Catholics have this problem. So, having teachers with official, recognized credentials backs up the work we do, which we also hope speaks for itself.

To those who encouraged us and prayed for us through that time, THANK YOU!
